About Karl Rutter

After more than 30 years experience in both the for-profit and not-for-profit worlds, I founded Karl Rutter Consulting LLC, a boutique consulting firm focused in higher education and not-for-profit institutions.

Using my for-profit background and business acumen, I can quickly identify opportunities for growth and create new initiatives rooted in sound business practices, bridging the not-for-profit and for-profit worlds. My experience also includes teaching on both the graduate and undergraduate levels, both in person and online.

My experience in higher education extends to the administrative side of the industry in the areas of:  business development, partnerships, program development, recruitment, and strategic management for both the domestic and international markets. In my past roles I haves added value to both short- and long-term programs, building on sound business practices. Much of my experience is with self funded programs and generating incremental revenue for universities. Having worked with complex institutions at both tuition-driven and Ivy League universities, this has allowed me to to assemble a toolbox of high-impact, low-cost solutions to help schools achieve their goals.

I worked with a breadth of degree and non-degree initiatives, including certificate, English language, pre-college, and international student and summer programs. This experience enables me with cross-functional and cross-discipline teams.

I built business accumen in my early career working in the for-profit world, working prestigious publishing companies such as Macmillan and Time Warner in sales and marketing. While in publishing, I had the opportunity to work with international distribution launching Zagat Survey guide books in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan using various entry strategies. I also started the graphic novel division of DC Comics, building sales from zero to $3 million in just 2 years.

I lived in 5 countries and speaks 3 languages. My undergraduate undergraduate degree is in German Language and Literature, in foreign from Hunter College, received the prestigious German Academic Exchange (DAAD) scholarship to study 20th Century German Literature in Regensburg, Germany, hold a MBA in global marketing management from Fordham University Gabelli School of Business, was a Fulbright Scholar in Monterrey, México.

When not gardening, he does volunteer work with the LGBT homeless youth community cooking meals and working on fund-raising events.

“Karl is exceptionally skilled at identifying underlying issues, developing creative solutions, and then ensuring new initiatives are planned and executed with high rates of success. Karl is confident in taking calculated risks, and our program portfolio and new incoming student body were beneficiaries of his carefully crafted approaches. I found Karl to be a great brainstorming partner, and he trusted among his peers and leadership to take ownership of a wide variety of projects. Beyond that, he is articulate, well-traveled, and interesting in virtually any conversation on any topic—all great qualities for building positive working relationships within and across organizations and industries.”
